Top Reasons Why Playing Sports Helps with School

For generations, students have stereotypically thought of athletes as unintelligent. However, a 2019 study conducted by the NCAA states, “the likelihood of an NCAA athlete earning a college degree is significantly greater; graduation success rates are 86% in Division I, 71% in Division II and 87% in Division III.” The truth is there is an abundance of reasons why participating in a school sport will benefit students—we outline three of them below.
There is a lot that can happen during a game, and players are bound to make mistakes. For instance, a softball player may never hit the ball while they’re up to bat. Instead of feeling defeated, this is an opportunity for the individual to reflect on their skillset. They may pay special attention to certain aspects, such as stance and eye contact, and then practice a new approach next time they’re at the plate. This player is problem-solving, as they are finding a solution rather than having someone else tell them what to do. This skill translates well in the classroom, as it teaches students to not become frustrated when they’re struggling to solve a math problem or complete a writing assignment.
In sports, there is typically a consequence if a player does not fulfill their responsibilities. For example, if you don’t show up to practice on time, the coach may have you run extra sprints. This teaches student-athletes the value of responsibility and accountability. This is incredibly important when it comes to homework and studying—you’ll be setting yourself up for success.
Master the Art of Preparing
One of the biggest keys to succeeding in sports is how you prepare for a big game. This also applies to school, for when you have to study for a test or give a presentation. Competing in sports gives young adults the chance to learn how to properly prepare for something with high stakes.
